Brushing

It is recommended that you brush twice a day, thoroughly, for up to three minutes. Be sure to brush all angles of your teeth, the hard to reach areas, and your tongue. The most important times to brush are first thing in the morning and before bed. If brushing after lunch is possible, you will decrease susceptibility to damage caused by plaque or toxins from food.
Remember that brushing alone isn’t enough to achieve overall cleanliness of the mouth. A tooth is composed of five sides and brushing only covers three out of the five. To access the more difficult to reach areas requires dental floss, mouth wash, and/or other related deep cleaning tools.

It is a common misconception that toothpaste is the secret behind clean teeth when, in all actuality, it is about the brush. The mechanical application of the bristles against the teeth is what gets them clean.  It is most effective to brush your teeth with your toothbrush and only water for 3 minutes before adding toothpaste or whitening products. These work best when applied to a nice clean surface. Work the bristles along the gum line as that is where it is most important to clean.(p>

Mouthwash

The best bet for mouthwash is any mouthwash containing fluoride as it acts to protect the enamel on your teeth. The best time for rinsing is typically before bedtime. This will help control bad breath, also known as halitosis. Halitosis can be controlled by brushing your teeth and tongue, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash. Another important aspect of oral hygiene is tongue scraping.  Scraping the tongue not only prevents stale and smelly breath but it also removes plaque that can eventually find its way onto your teeth.  If a tongue brush is not accessible, you can use your toothbrush as an alternative.

Snacking

Frequent snacking can result in plaque buildup, naturally increasing the risk of cavities.  Your choice of food can make a big difference as well.  Instead of having chocolate snacks, try having a piece of cheese. Dairy products are a good choice because they are alkaline, which helps fight against the acids that can harm your teeth.

Keep in mind that fruits and juices also contain high levels of acid that can break down tooth enamel.  If you are going to consume these foods, it is best to eat them with meals rather than during times where saliva flow is at a minimum.
